Downtown began broadcasting in September of 2011 on the stations of Blueberry Broadcasting in Bangor. In January of 2013, the show moved to Townsquare Media’s 92.9 FM and two years later we found our perfect fit at Zone Radio and WZON.
From the time of our launch, Downtown’s goal was to create a different type of show. Our mission was to feature the best guest list in the state and to have those guests drive the program, as opposed to the standard talk radio fare of hot takes and angry callers.
We also sought to find a unique mix of sports and entertainment that would vary depending on both the guest list and what was happening in the world at any given time. While our show is based in Bangor, we view it as a national program, featuring regular appearances by people like Dan Shulman and Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, Tom Verducci and Jay Jaffe of Sports Illustrated, and legendary writers like Frank DeFord, Rick Reilly, Rick Telander, and Jerry Izenberg. The biggest names in Boston sports media are frequently heard, as well as weekly check-ins with University of Maine coaches.
On the entertainment side, Downtown welcomes some of the biggest names in the business to the Maine airwaves, including actors Julie Andrews, Bryan Cranston, Jeff Daniels, Henry Winkler, John O’Hurley, Mike Farrell, and Stephen Tobolowsky, musicians Ben Folds, Mickey Dolenz, Jimmy Webb, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Noel Paul Stookey, and Don Felder, comedians Lewis Black, Mike Birbiglia, Jeff Altman, and Michael Ian Black, and historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Ken Burns.
